Áine who led the session explains:

“I used facts that the young people and their parents had sent me privately and created a guessing game to see how well we know each other.

“The young people were very good at this and knew their friends really well.

“Some were tricky and we learnt lots of new facts about everyone along the way.

“We played a “Danni or Aine” game which is a bit like the TV show ‘Mr and Mrs’ where we tested our friendship.

“The young people found this very entertaining because we didn’t agree on much. Our drawing skills also left a lot to be desired.

“We finished the session with a picture round where we had to guess which staff member or volunteer’s face had been blurred.

“This round went very quickly as everyone was good at recognising them from the rest of their appearance or the picture itself.

“It was nice to have a session devoted to getting to know and discuss each of our members and we all did surprisingly well.”

“Some of the young people dressed up (and made their own costumes) and others brought props to show us.

“We used our new emotion cards to check-in and see how everyone was feeling after their week off.

“We discussed Superman, characters from Harry Potter, Peter Pan and others.

“One of our young people had dressed up as herself and her superpower was adulting.

“It was lovely to hear about the different characters and what we like about them.

“After discussing everyone’s favourite, we played a game of ‘guess the superhero’ using emojis.

“As well as the young people, Danni was very good at this.

“We did a superhero themed word search and then finished with our very own superhero factfile.

“Everyone got very creative in making and naming their own superhero, and telling the group about their unique superpowers.

“The young people were all in great spirits and were discussing what they are getting up to the rest of the week - one young person is extremely excited about getting to the cinema tomorrow for the first time since lockdown!”

Sarah who led the baking session says: “This afternoon the young people made banana pancakes!

“The young people ensured hands were thoroughly washing before beginning.

“They carefully poured and measured their ingredients and spent lots of time mixing.

“The pancakes were a great success as the young people took special care when using the stove.

“Everyone enjoyed them (including the parents).

“A wide variety of toppings were used such as sugar and lemon, chocolate spread, grapes and raspberries.

“The young people made sure they cleaned up their kitchens once they had enjoyed their pancakes.”

One way we continue to support our young people during the continued Covid-19 pandemic is by providing structured opportunities to take part in fun, group-based virtual exercise sessions.

On Thursday 9 July, Danni hosted a health and fitness session with the aim to promote wellbeing as well as have fun! Danni explains what the session entailed:

“Today it was my turn to host a Health and Fitness session on Zoom.

“I decided to host a dancercise session which we started off with the 'cha cha slide'.

“Next the young people showed me some of their own dance moves to 'I like to move it move it’ followed by some ‘Baby Shark’.

“With a water break after each dance we finished up today by having a DJ session - asking the young people what songs they would like to hear...

“We listened to The Script, Westlife and Justin Bieber.

Wednesday 7 July 2020

This afternoon‘s activity was arts and crafts and with Nicole’s help and added entertainment, Áine demonstrated how to make a concentration game.

8d333353-fe31-4e61-999b-05f6e38047b4.jpeg

Each young person came prepared with all their resources and many were using their table cloths and aprons provided by Autonomie.

e63e870e-b72c-48b0-bd23-e2a4777a91cb.jpeg

They also had great helpers nearby to assist tricky cutting and messy glueing. Everyone did a fantastic job, each making their game bright and colourful.

Some of us numbered our tunnels to practice our numeracy skills and others painted them different colours in order to practice their sequencing.

The finished games looked amazing and each young person was perfecting their balance and concentration by the end of the Zoom video session, all of them successfully playing the game that they had made by themselves.
